A sunken ‘UFO’ discovered in the Baltic Sea in 2011 is still one of the internet’s biggest alien conspiracies more than a decade later.
Talk of extra-terrestrial life is rife on social media after a ufologist claimed to show real alien corpses to the Mexican government earlier this month.
Sunken ‘UFO’ in Baltic Sea
In June 2011, two ocean explorers took a sonar image of the Baltic Sea floor and found a strange disc-shaped object on the sea floor between Sweden and Finland.
Peter Lindberg, Dennis Åberg and their Swedish Ocean X diving team were treasure hunting at the center of the Gulf of Bothnia when they made the discovery.
It was around 200 feet in diameter and one of the members claimed their cameras and satellite phones stopped working while directly above it.
This quickly prompted conspiracies that the object, which looks like Star Wars’ Millennium Falcon, is a UFO that crashed in the sea and sunk.
“We need to know what we’ve found,” Lindberg said at the time. “Media has been speculating about everything from UFOs to Russian spaceships.”

It’s likely to be a rock formation
Following the extra-terrestrial speculation, a number of scientists explained that it’s probably just rocks on the sea bed.
Experts said it’s likely to be a natural circular rock formation called a pillow basalt or a glacial deposit – not a UFO.
“A natural, geological formation can’t be ruled out. I agree the finding looks weird since it’s completely circular. But nature has produced stranger things than that,” Göran Ekberg, a marine archaeologist at Maritime Museum in Stockholm said.

Conspiracies are still rife
Despite expert opinion, conspiracies surrounding the object, which has been named the Baltic Sea Anomaly, are still rife.
One person recently wrote on Twitter: “Why does the UFO at the bottom of the Baltic Sea disrupt electrical equipment near divers? This case poses intriguing questions.”
“I’m not sure if I should talk about the UFO wreckage that sank to the bottom of the Baltic Sea,” said another.
A third person added: “The Baltic Sea anomaly is still on my radar. Puerto Rico has a long history of UFOs coming out of the ocean.”
“We already know about probably very old UFO that crashed at the bottom of Baltic Sea. We have known it since 2011,” someone else tweeted.
