OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (KMID/KPEJ) – “What is this thing” is a question still being asked after an object was seen in the sky at about 7:29pm on March 4. People from across Oklahoma, Colorado, and New Mexico were all sending video of the mysterious object to news stations across the states.

On March 4, SpaceX launched Starlink satellites from Florida. Experts didn’t think the launch matched up with what people saw in the western sky.

“It couldn’t have been that one if they were facing west to see it,” said astronomer Wayne Harris-Wyrick.

The mystery captured the attention of people across the country including Thomas Hays, an aerospace engineer in Denver.

Hays believes it was Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites, for internet connectivity, which launched at 5:56pm Central Time.

“Headed out over the ocean and then came back across Oklahoma 90 minutes later,” said Dr. Hays.

Hays said the glow was because this was right after sunset. Although it was dark on Earth, it’s still full daylight in space where it was illuminated by the sun.
