Former top Pentagon official Sean Kirkpatrick, who oversaw unexplained encounters in the US until last year – fears conspiracy theorists jump on hush-ups to promote their agendas.

He said: «If there is a void in the information space, it will be filled with the imagination of the public.» He claimed big cheeses stopped him doing more press conferences about what his team had uncovered.

Mr Kirkpatrick said: «The fact the Pentagon leadership can’t figure out how to get at that message without concern for spillage into other areas has always been frustrating.»

Pentagon spokesperson Eric Pahon denied it stopped press conferences. He added: «Standard procedure within the department is to have public engagements cleared by higher officials. To our knowledge, any media engagement Dr Kirkpatrick recommended or requested was approved.»

Pentagon secrecy regarding UFOs spiked again last year after retired Major David Grusch, a former Air Force intelligence official, accused the government of a massive cover-up.

He said they had been hiding top secret information around a decades-long programme to retrieve and reverse-engineer alien craft. It comes after a top psychologist pleaded with the UK government to stop keeping its UFO information under lock and key.

Daniel Stubbings, of Cardiff Metropolitan University, said secrecy around the eerie topic makes people feel frightened.

He said: «If it is the case that there is no substance to the UFO issue beyond misperceptions, paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, gullibility and disinformation then the government, military and academic organisations need to openly and transparently look under every alleged rock in this topic.

«But they have chosen to do the exact opposite, which increases the suspicion that there is something to hide.”
