The project marks Spielberg’s return to the UFO-themed film genre since his iconic sci-fi film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Spielberg first explored the UFO genre with E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which became the highest-grossing film of all time upon its release.

Even legendary directors like Steven Spielberg have been involved with films they’re less than proud of.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial was released in 1982 and was directed by Steven Spielberg with a script by Melissa Mathison. The film follows the story of Elliott, a young boy who befriends an extraterrestrial creature named E.T. who is stranded on Earth. Together with his friends and family, Elliott must help E.T. find a way to return home. The film features Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton, and Drew Barrymore in starring roles. The concept for E.T. originated from an imaginary friend Spielberg created after his parents’ divorce.

In 1980, Spielberg collaborated with Melissa Mathison to develop a new story based on the unrealized project Night Skies. Mathison completed the first draft of the script, titled E.T. and Me, in less than two months. After being rejected by Columbia Pictures, Universal Pictures acquired the script for $1 million. The film was shot from September to December 1981 with a budget of $10.5 million. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial became a blockbuster success, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time, a record it held for eleven years until Spielberg’s Jurassic Park surpassed it in 1993.

‘One of the Greatest Things I’ve Ever Seen’: Steven Spielberg Praises Dune 2

Steven Spielberg lauded Dune: Part Two and revealed his favorite scene from the film, which he called one of the «greatest things» he’s ever seen.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind is considered one of the most significant science fiction films for introducing benign or even friendly aliens, a departure from the ‘evil monster’ portrayal common in earlier films. The film popularized several motifs inspired by purported genuine UFO encounters, such as alien abduction, slender aliens («greys»), and UFOs with lights rather than the disc-shaped objects popular in the 1950s and 1960s. The film has been revised multiple times, including a 132-minute «special edition» reissue in 1980 and a 137-minute «collector’s edition» in 1988. Spielberg was given an unprecedented budget of $20 million for the film.

Steven Spielberg’s Last Film Was Semi-Autobiographical

Spielberg’s most recent film was the semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans starring Seth Rogen, Michelle Williams, and Paul Dano. The film follows young Sammy Fabelman(based on Spielberg himself) in post-World War II Arizona as he aspires to become a filmmaker and discovers a family secret that prompts him to explore how films can reveal the truth.
