Steven Spielberg will return to science-fiction with a new UFO movie. After directing his breakout thriller Jaws in 1975, Spielberg transitioned into directing one of the most acclaimed sci-fi films of all time: Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He has also directed other science-fiction films including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, War of the Worlds, and Ready Player One. Most recently, Spielberg helmed the 2022 film The Fabelmans, which is a semi-autobiographical account of the director’s childhood and journey to become involved in the film industry.

As per Variety, Spielberg will now be directing an original UFO movie. Very little has been revealed about this film, but it is confirmed that the sci-fi film is based on Spielberg’s original idea. The screenplay will be written by David Koepp. Further information surrounding story details, casting, release date, and a title, have yet to be announced.

Why Steven Spielberg’s Return To Sci-Fi Is a Good Idea

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Truffaut

In moving away from the more conventional Hollywood drama, Spielberg can restore the freshness in his work.

Before the days of Schindler’s List or Lincoln, Spielberg’s name was practically synonymous with the genre film. Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, though different genres, are prime examples of this fact. Even decades later, many of the special effects hold up for Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and even where it’s dated, its captivating ability to create tension and suspense is undeniable even watching it today.

In the last couple of decades, Spielberg has largely pivoted away from sci-fi, action, and other genre-based films. Instead, he has chosen to make a number of dramas, including Schindler’s List, Bridge of Spies, and Lincoln. There are some exceptions to this, including 2018’s Ready Player One, as well as the early 21st century movies A.I. Artificial Intelligence and Minority Report. Still, Spielberg’s modern-day career is largely dominated by period drama.

It is in these period dramas that Spielberg’s work can sometimes feel tired and formulaic. The Post is a great example of this fact. While a relatively compelling story and strong acting, The Post’s sweeping score and conventional structure cannot help but have a saccharine quality to it. The same can be said for much of the director’s recent work, including his semi-autobiographical film The Fabelmans, which at times feels overly sentimental.

In moving away from the more conventional Hollywood drama, Spielberg can restore the freshness in his work. The sci-fi genre, especially with an original story, is promising for Spielberg, given his positive track record with the genre. Hopefully, the new Spielberg UFO film can deliver as it continues its development.
