An extraterrestrial expert has crunched the numbers and ranked the best and worst places in the UK to go if you are looking to have a close encounter with a UFO.

Over the last year Brits reported a whopping 323 cases of possible alien vessels spotted in the skies over the UK. The reports are widespread across the British Isles, from Scotland to Cornwall, but there is one place that has the most sightings-per-person. The North West came top overall, with 41 sightings in the region which includes Manchester and Liverpool. Meanwhile the South East, which includes Reading, Oxford and Guilford came a close second with 40.

Meanwhile there were 39 sightings in the South West and 38 in East England with 36 in Yorkshire — the previous hotspot. Scotland came in in sixth place with 32 reported sightings while Wales had 21. Finally came the East Midlands with 20, London, and the West Midlands with 19 each, just 13 in the North East and only five in Northern Ireland. However due to a statistical quirk, UFO boffins say the numbers show that the most likely place to spot a flying saucer is in fact Wales.

This is because the population is lower in Wales and so the sightings-per-head of the population work out higher. The figures were compiled by Ash Ellis, a UFO researcher and investigator – he said Wales has a ‘Rate of Sightings’ rating of 1.7 compared to the national average of just 1.5.

Mr Ellis said: “A notable shoutout for Wales.Despite the relatively low number of reports, it actually comes joint-top of the table due to the lesser population of the country. Cementing their place as a long-known UFO hotspot. So if you want to see a UFO this year, maybe take a holiday to Wales.”

Mr Ellis, founder of UFO Identified and host of Pursuit of the Paranormal Podcast, added: “The ‘Rate of Sightings’ is a mathematical formula based on the population of each region, and country, of the UK.

“This gives us a simple figure — the higher the figure, the higher the number of sightings reported per person. We believe this creates a more accurate representation of where you are more likely to have seen a UFO during the year.”
