Have aliens visited Earth? The never-ending debate about UFOs is in no danger of going away anytime soon, and it seems that reports of unexplained sightings in the sky are not either.

In its annual report, the research group UFO Identified documented 395 sightings in the UK in 2023 – a 20 per cent drop from 497 sightings in 2022 and lower than in 2021 (413) and 2020 (484). That adds up to 1,789 sightings in four years.

Information was taken from social media, newspaper reports, and more than 50 Freedom of Information requests, as well as from reports made directly to UFO spotter groups around the UK.

In Cambridgeshire, there were seven reports of UFO sightings in 2023. Two of these sightings were in Cambridge.

On April 17, 2023 at 8.20PM, an anonymous source saw a «Beam of light in the shape of a ball flew towards the witness in his van at high speed, very low and with no sound.» Again, on October 17, 2023, an anonymous source reported seeing «disturbing sounds and weird lights hovering above Orchard Park. Like a star but others coming from it flashing changing colours.»

There was also a possible UFO sighting in Peterborough when a few days before Christmas on December 23 at 6:30am, a witness claims they saw something extraordinary. On the database, it says «Mega structure bigger than a football pitch with multi-colour flashing lights. Stationary with straight lines visible.» The sighting apparently lasted for 10 minutes.

But there were also alleged sightings in rural Cambridgeshire. The last four sightings of the year were seen in Wisbech, St Neots, Wimblington and St Ives. The strangest of these reports in Wisbech on September 7 at 9.50pm when a witness claims to have seen «several, up to 15, silent white lights followed by two fighter jets then one single white light followed by an apache helicopter.»
