A fiery formation of objects above Leicester is among Leicestershire’s most recent UFO sightings. Thousands have been recorded in the UK in recent years, but latest figures show a decline in those spotting something unusual up above.

The findings came in latest data from UFO Identified which looks at the number of documented UK sightings every year. The UFO spotter website shows that in the past 12 months, there were three such sightings across Leicestershire, spanning all parts of the county.

Latest data reveals the most intriguing event happened above the skies of Leicester on Saturday, September 2 last year when an orb was sighted. According to the list, “multiple bright fiery objects” were spotted in formation above the city before they were then noted to make “strange and erratic” movements in tandem.

The sighting claimed that the fiery objects were “fairly low” in the sky. The timing of the alleged orb was on the same day as Leicester Pride where light shows did form part of events at Abbey Park, but it is unclear if the annual celebration of the city’s LGBTQ+ community had played a part in events.

Last year also saw reported UFO sightings above Market Harborough when “highly reflective” objects were seen moving slowly in the sky. The objects, which also flashed at times, had an “unusual hue” according to the reports, while they were also irregular in shape.

The most recent sighting came in the days before Christmas when in the skies above Loughborough, a circular light was reportedly “zig-zagging” up, down and then sideways before shooting off towards the East coast. A second light was seen in the area at the same time and remained higher up.

The three Leicestershire sightings in 2023 form part of 395 documented sightings across the UK last year. That’s a 20 per cent drop from 497 sightings in 2022 and lower than in 2021 (413) and 2020 (484). Over the past four years, UFO Identified said there had been 1,789 sightings across the UK.

Ash Ellis of UFO Identified said: “Overall, it’s disappointing to see such a big decrease in reports this year, especially after the bumper year of 2022. This time last year we were hoping that a reduction in the stigma surrounding the topic would lead to more reports being filed, but this clearly hasn’t been the case.

“Hopefully, as we and other groups around the country continue giving people space and a platform to talk about their experiences that will help more people come forward and be confident to stand up and tell their story. Despite the reduced number of reports, we continue to see the same trends across different datasets.”

According to UFO Identified’s report, people in the North West had the best chance of seeing a UFO last year, with 41 sightings across the region, followed by the South East (40) and then the South West (39). The lowest number of sightings have been reported in Northern Ireland (30).

The most common sighting was a “star-like” UFO, followed by an orb – with several different witnesses reporting clusters of orbs in the skies across different locations, including in Leicestershire. The vast majority of sightings were of far-off objects in the sky, but there were 27 “Close Encounters of the First Kind” – more than double the previous year. These are reports of UFOs seen up close, at a distance of no more than 500ft away.

Mr Ellis firmly believed that UFOs existed and that some areas experienced reports more than others. He said: “Whether that’s the area in which sightings are being made, to the time of day, and the described shape of UFO’s, and so on, these have all been consistent over the past four years. This, to me, tells us that there are areas which are more prone to seeing UFOs and we will be using this data to forecast areas of interest over the coming years.”
