The US government has sought to explain away a vast array of reported sightings of UFOs in a new report.

In the 1950s and 60s a whole host of apparent alien sightings from members of the public had been passed on to the government and it’s now been revealed what people were seeing.

The Pentagon report that was submitted to Congress on Friday (March 8) is part of the US government’s continued efforts to examine apparent sightings of UAP (unidentified anomalous phenomena), more commonly known as UFOs.

Researchers now believe they can explain why so many reports of UFO sightings were recorded from the 1950s and 60s.

They believe technological advancements are the explanation, with «high-altitude balloons» causing a rush of UFO speculation when one crashed near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947.

And more than half of the UFO sightings investigated were deemed to be US reconnaissance flights, one of which was the Canadian VZ-9AV Avrocar fighter-bomber – a circular craft designed to take off and land vertically.

The report highlighted how public interest in UFOs has increased the credibility of some sightings in the public consciousness. It said: «The proliferation of television programmes, books, movies, and the vast amount of internet and social media content centred on UAP-related topics most likely has influenced the public conversation on this topic, and reinforced these beliefs within some sections of the population.»

According to a poll carried out by Gallup in 2021, over 40% of Americans think that alien spacecraft have visited Earth, up from 33% in two years. UAP sightings in the US are currently reported at a rate of 50 to 100 per month.
