Troops in Ukraine reportedly spotted a mysterious disc-shaped UFO hovering above them and captured pictures of the curious object using a reconnaissance drone.
Knewz.com has learned that the footage was captured by troops from the 406th Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine using a «heat vision» quadcopter drone.
Thermal imaging from the DJI brand Mavic 3T drone shows that the «UFO» had a higher temperature than its surroundings, as it was seen as «black hot» on the screen.
The footage shows the mysterious disc-like object standing still in the sky, hovering more than 500 feet above sea level at around 30 miles from the soldiers who spotted it, according to Newsweek.
The troops who spotted the UFO were understandably baffled by the mysterious hovering object, as one of them can be heard saying in the footage, «Holy ****. What the **** is this? Why isn’t it moving?»
Another soldier wondered why the object was not firing missiles at them, as flying foreign objects in the airspace of Ukraine could only mean an airstrike or a recon drone in the current context.
«I’m telling you, it’s a UFO, for sure. It is staying in place, on the screen,» one of the members of the 406th Battalion can be heard saying. «Zoom in more. It’s standing still, do you see?… Can’t see anything on the thermal cameras?» said another.
Yet another soldier suggested they «ram» the UFO, presumably with the thermal imaging drone they used to observe it closely.
The news outlet Daily Mail, which first obtained the footage of the UFO, reported that the mysterious object has a «striking resemblance» to the unidentified object dubbed as the Baghdad Phantom, «the skinny, cylindrical object spotted above Iraq in May 2022 by the infrared ‘heat’ camera of a US Air Force Reaper drone.»
The commercial DJI brand Mavic 3T thermal-imaging drone was gifted to the 406th Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine via the fundraising efforts of the DeepInspire Foundation, Mail reported.
The news outlet reached out to the battalion for further information about the incident through Pavlo Terletsky, a fintech entrepreneur who runs the DeepInspire tech consultancy and has helped supply aid to the 406th through the foundation.
«[The troops] are currently sleeping [it] off, after a 48-hour mission… will be able to get back to you tomorrow with more details,» Terletsky responded.
While the footage has taken social media by storm, with multiple individuals sharing the clip on X, formerly known as Twitter, netizens on Reddit have attributed the appearance of the UFO to an age-old phenomenon known as «Fata Morgana.»
Flight safety guide SKYbrary describes a Fata Morgana as «a complex form of superior mirage that is seen in a narrow band right above the horizon… Fata Morgana mirages significantly distort the object or objects on which they are based, often such that the object is completely unrecognizable.»
In this context, a Fata Morgana could have caused an object in the sea to appear distorted and hovering in the sky. «This could just be an optical illusion of filming something on a body of water… of course it’s only a couple seconds as usual,» a Reddit user suggested, according to Daily Mail.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time a mysterious flying object has been spotted in Ukraine during the ongoing Russian invasion.
According to Newsweek, Vasily Golubev, the governor of Russia’s southern Rostov region, said on Telegram back in January 2023 that a «small-size object in the shape of a ball» had been discovered flying «in the wind» at an altitude of around one and a half miles.
«The decision was taken to liquidate it… I urge everyone to remain calm. To ensure security, all forces and means are involved. The sky is covered with anti-aircraft defenses,» Golubev wrote at the time, according to the outlet. The incident in January was also reported by the local news outlet Pivyet Rostov, which wrote that «a UFO in the form of a ball was shot down in the sky.»
