The Flatwoods Monster, also called the Braxton County Monster, got its name from the area where people first saw the weird creature.
The “Ghost of the Woods” was first seen on September 12, 1952, in Flatwoods, West Virginia, USA. That night, lots of people saw weird things in the sky over Virginia, Washington, DC, and other places in the east. Kathleen May’s sons, Edward, 13, and Fred, 12, and their friend Tommy Hyer, 10, were playing football at school when they saw something strange in the sky. They watched as a UFO landed on a hill near their neighbor G. Bailey Fisher’s farm.
They got scared and ran home to tell their mom, Kathleen. She was a hairdresser in the village. Since it was already 7:15 in the evening, she took a flashlight and went with the boys to see what it was. Three other boys joined them: Ronnie Shaver, 10, Neil Nunley, 14, and Eugene Lemon, 17, who was a National Guardsman and had his dog with him.
As they walked to the farm, Eugene’s dog ran ahead and then came back barking, looking scared. But Kathleen and the boys kept going. When they got to the top of the hill, about 1300 feet away, they smelled something strange coming from a weird mist.
Kathleen said the air was foggy and misty. She mentioned, “The air smelled like metal and made our eyes and noses hurt.” After a bit, some of them started feeling sick. Suddenly, they saw a big ball of fire, about 10 feet wide, only 100 meters away from them. But that wasn’t all. Soon after, Gene saw two lights next to the fireball. He pointed his flashlight at an oak tree and saw strange lights there.
In front of them stood a tall figure that looked a bit like a person, but when they looked closer, they realized it wasn’t human. The description of the creature is a bit different from person to person, possibly because they were very scared and it was dark. They called it the “Flatwoods Monster.” It was said to be about 7 feet tall, but some said it was even taller, like 10 or 11 feet. Its head was diamond-shaped and elongated, and its face was dark with a faint glow. Others said its head looked like a hooded card (like the Ace of Spades) with a red, round face. Its eyes were big and not like human…
