01/6The myth of UFOs is one as old as time
Unidentified flying objects (UFOs) are any aerial phenomena that cannot be immediately identified or explained by conventional means. UFOs have been reported throughout history, but they gained more attention and popularity in the 20th and 21st centuries, especially after the Roswell incident in 1947, which sparked a wave of interest and speculation about the possibility of extraterrestrial visitors. While most UFO sightings can be attributed to human or natural causes, some remain unexplained or controversial, and have generated various theories and investigations. Here are five of the most credible modern UFO sightings, based on the evidence and the witnesses involved.
02/6The Tehran Incident (1976)
One of the most dramatic and well-documented UFO sightings occurred on September 19, 1976, when two Iranian Air Force F-4 Phantom II fighter jets encountered an unidentified flying object over the capital city of Tehran. The pilots, Lieutenant Parviz Jafari and Captain Mohammad Reza Azizkhani, were scrambled to intercept a bright, star-like object that was reported by several civilians and a radar station. As they approached the object, they experienced communication and instrumentation failures, and were unable to fire their weapons. The object also emitted smaller objects that flew towards the jets, forcing them to take evasive maneuvers. The object then sped away at an incredible speed, and was chased by a third jet, piloted by Lieutenant Yaddi Nazeri, who also witnessed its erratic behavior and luminosity. The incident was reported by the Iranian government to the US government, and was investigated by the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), which concluded that the object was “an outstanding UFO case” and “a classic which meets all the criteria necessary for a valid study of the UFO phenomenon”. The incident was also featured in several media outlets, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and CBS News, and was considered one of the most convincing and significant UFO cases ever.

03/6The O’Hare Airport Incident (2006)
On November 7, 2006, several witnesses, including airline employees, pilots, and passengers, reported seeing a metallic, saucer-shaped object hovering over gate C-17 of the O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois. The object was estimated to be about 20 to 30 feet in diameter, and was visible for about five minutes, before it shot up into the sky, leaving a hole in the clouds. The object did not appear on the airport’s radar, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) dismissed the incident as a weather phenomenon. However, some witnesses claimed that the object was clearly a solid, physical craft, and that the FAA and the airlines were covering up the truth. The incident was investigated by the National Aviation Reporting Center on Anomalous Phenomena (NARCAP), a private organization that studies UFOs and aviation safety, and the Chicago Tribune, which published a series of articles on the case. The incident remains unexplained and controversial.

04/6 The Stephenville Lights (2008)
On January 8, 2008, dozens of residents of Stephenville, Texas, and the surrounding areas, reported seeing multiple bright lights in the night sky, moving in a formation or a single arc. Some witnesses also described seeing two military jets chasing the lights, or a large, silent, triangular-shaped craft, with red, white, and blue lights, flying at low altitude. The lights were visible for about 15 minutes, and were seen by various credible witnesses, such as a pilot, a police officer, a county constable, and a former air traffic controller. The US Air Force initially denied having any aircraft in the area, but later admitted that they had 10 F-16 fighter jets conducting a training mission that night. However, some witnesses and researchers disputed the Air Force’s explanation and suggested that the lights and the craft were of unknown origin. The incident was featured on several media outlets, such as CNN, ABC, and The History Channel, and was investigated by the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), a non-profit organization that studies UFOs. The incident is considered one of the most significant UFO sightings in recent history.

05/6The Belgium UFO Wave (1989-1990)
One of the most famous and well-investigated UFO sightings occurred in Belgium, from November 1989 to April 1990, involving thousands of witnesses and multiple radar confirmations. The UFOs were described as large, triangular-shaped objects with bright lights, flying at low altitudes and high speeds. The UFOs were first spotted by two police officers on patrol near the town of Eupen, who followed the object for about an hour, and reported it to the local air traffic control. The object was also seen by other police officers and civilians in different locations, and was tracked by ground and airborne radars. The Belgian Air Force launched several jet fighters to intercept the object, but they could not catch up with it or identify it. The UFO wave lasted for several months, and was witnessed by over 13,000 people, including a NATO colonel and a major-general. The Belgian Air Force and the Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy conducted a thorough investigation of the sightings, but could not find any conventional explanation for the objects. The incident was widely covered by the national and international media, and was considered one of the best-documented and most credible UFO cases ever.

06/6The USS Omaha Incident (2019)
On July 15, 2019, a US Navy warship, the USS Omaha, encountered an unidentified submerged object (USO) in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of San Diego, California. The object was detected by the ship’s radar, sonar, and electro-optical systems, and was also observed by a helicopter and a drone. The object appeared as a spherical shape, about six feet in diameter, glowing in the dark. The object moved erratically, at speeds up to 158 mph, and at depths up to 500 feet. The object also seemed to be able to switch from air to water, and vice versa, without any resistance or drag. The object was tracked for about an hour, before it disappeared into the water. The incident was recorded by the ship’s cameras, and the footage was later leaked and confirmed by the Pentagon as authentic. The object was classified as a “transmedium” vehicle, meaning that it can operate in different environments, such as air, water, and space. The incident is one of the most recent and intriguing UFO sightings reported by the US military.
