Several Canadian pilots were heard discussing the possibility that they were seeing a UFO earlier this month after they reported seeing “multiple lights” moving in odd patterns and “forming triangles” thousands of feet in the air.

The discussion took place two and a half hours early in the morning of Jan. 19. The conversation was edited down to a 13-minute clip by CTV News, where at least four different aircraft reported seeing the lights as high as 100,000 feet in the air.

At about 4:45 a.m. local time, one air traffic controller in Winnipeg tells the pilots that they believe the lights are a satellite, but others are not so sure.

«I’m certainly no expert, but they’re moving side-to-side and then going away from each other and then forming triangles,» an Air Canada pilot said while flying over Saskatchewan. «That doesn’t really seem like they’re in any type of orbit. But I mean, I’m no expert.»

A pilot from a nearby Flair Airlines flight replied, “Yeah, it’s quite bizarre. There’s around six of them just randomly in formation flying at a high altitude at 12 o’clock.”

Another pilot on board a Morningstar Air Express cargo flight claimed that the lights were “definitely not satellites.” They added, «It’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen in the 15 years of night flying that I’ve done.»

Another air traffic controller said they had “no idea what that might be” as they were not aware of any active airspace or military airspace where the lights were reported. Some pilots claimed they had been seeing the lights for months, with one WestJet pilot claiming they had seen the lights “for the last 18 months or so.”

The strange sightings were first published in a report by Canada’s federal transportation department, Transport Canada, on Jan. 23.

However, the department noted that «reports contain preliminary, unconfirmed data which can be subject to change.»

A Transport Canada spokesperson told CTV News, «Reports of unidentified objects can rarely be followed up on as they are, as the title implies, unidentified. The department is reviewing the circumstances of this incident and will take appropriate action if non-compliance with the regulations is identified.»

All pilots must promptly report sightings of any objects in the air or on the ground that seem hostile, suspicious, unidentified, or involved in potential illegal smuggling activities, as per the rules of Nav Canada, a non-profit organization responsible for managing Canada’s civilian air navigation system.

Mick West, a coder, science communicator and self-described false conspiracy theory debunker, told CTV News that he believes what the pilots saw was sunlight reflecting off of SpaceX Starlink satellites.

However, Robert Powell, an engineer and founding board member of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies, told the outlet that he disagrees, saying that the lights “could have been almost anything.”
