Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth was the first video game in the Yakuza series that I have had the pleasure of playing, so I had no idea what to expect during my time in Hawaii. From taking on the Sujimon League to waking up on Dondoko Island not entirely sure what was going on, I had an absolute blast. However, one thing has stood out to me above everything else that I experienced in the game.
While I was traveling around Hawaii, I stumbled upon a substory that follows Karen, a young woman who has reported to the police that her chicken was abducted by aliens who are flying their UFO over Hawaii. This was definitely something I was not expecting to see while I was just checking out some of the shops around Anacanda Shopping Center. It’s the wildest, weirdest substory in the game, but I suspect a lot of players will miss it due to the steps needed to find it.

Close Encounters
First, you will need to invest $3,000 in Professor Okita’s Sojimaru, the giant vacuum cleaner that he is certain will make Hawaii the cleanest place on Earth. After that, you will need to run into Karen and the police officer outside the Anaconda Shopping Center after Chapter 4. Once you speak to Karen, she will ask you if you will meet her during the night, which is the main reason the substory is so easy to miss. You cannot change the time of day until the very end of the game, right before the final boss. If you don’t go back and speak to her before taking on Nele Island, you will never see this spectacular quest unfold.
But, assuming you meet all those criteria, you will be treated to the funniest quest that I have seen in gaming in some time. The quest’s entire premise seems ridiculous to begin with. After all, how was someone’s chicken stolen by a UFO when they lived in the middle of a major city in Hawaii? It is absolutely no wonder that the police didn’t take her seriously from the beginning. Who on earth would believe poor Karen?
Ichiban and Karen both fall asleep before being woken up by a bright purple light and a cow mooing loudly.
After traveling to a field located downtown, you and Karen wait up to see if this UFO appears. Ichiban and Karen both fall asleep before being woken up by a bright purple light and a cow mooing loudly. The cow will be taken up by the UFO and Karen will tell you she has three weapons, which will quickly make you think of that «one of these things is not like the other» meme. After exhausting your resources (and Karen pulling out a machine gun), you will need to use the rocket launcher to knock the UFO down.
Successfully knocking the UFO out of the sky results in a cutscene where an alien appears to stumble out of it. Upon further inspection, you will quickly realize that the inhabitant of the UFO is none other than Professor Okita. He will tell you that the UFO is actually Sujimaru, and it is a new flying vacuum he has created to clean the ocean. Sujimaru will then turn on him, causing him to yell out that he may have outfitted the device with enhanced armor and attack capabilities (because why wouldn’t a vacuum cleaner need that?).
Once you have taken care of Sujimaru, Becky (Karen’s chicken), Professor Okita, the cow, and countless old men will stumble out of the UFO. The professor will remark that his invention must think that old men are trash, which elicits a sarcastic response from Ichiban before the group leaves Sujimaru and the legend of the alien UFO behind.
As Ichiban walks off, the cow from earlier will moo loudly before a bright purple light beams down on it, and it begins to lift into the air. The camera will then pan to the defeated Sujimaru, showing that Karen may not have been wrong all along. While the entire quest is comical and leaves its mark without even trying, the final moments truly cement its status as one of the series’ most brilliant moments. Sujimaru may have been the main antagonist of this mission, but there may still be things out there beyond our understanding.
