48 YEARS AGO (1975): Mr. and Mrs. Tex Carroll and their two daughters attended the Highland Dancing competitions in November of 1975. The family had brought the camper down and the two girls were in the cabover bed when Maureen told her parents she had just seen a large red circle with flashing lights in the sky. Her parents laughed it off thinking Maureen had just been seeing things. Maureen stuck with her story and later that day news reports came in from other people in Kelowna, Kamloops and Clearwater who reported seeing the exact same phenomena as Maureen had described.

32 YEARS AGO (1991): Mayor and council gave themselves an unexpected pay hike, a year after approving an indemnity bylaw that laid out increases for 1991 and 1992. The increase came out of the blue without any discussion or debate. Prior to the 1990 municipal elections, previous mayor Donna Barnett and alderman adopted the bylaw that would see the mayor’s pay go up to $8,000 by 1992. Under the new bylaw, the mayor’s pay would jump to $9,000 in 1992 with the aldermen’s pay going to $4,500 annually. Mayor Ray Carlson had said that the aldermen did not seek input from the community but from other municipalities so they could gain an average.

23 YEARS AGO (2000): Grade 8 boys from 100 Mile Junior Secondary School showed their stuff at a tournament at PSO. There were three teams from Quesnel as well as teams from Clinton and Williams Lake. Organizer Shaun Melville said games were limited to 30 minutes each to give all the teams a chance to play as many games as possible. The Junior team went 9-1 on round-robin play. ‘”Overall the team looked really good and they had a great tournament,” said Melville who singled out Mile Janzen, Ryan Trimble and Jim Fisher for their strong play.

11 YEARS AGO (2012): RE/MAX Country Lakes realty was accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys at their 100 Mile and Interlakes locations for the 10th Annual Community Christmas Train. Five dollars cash was donated by the realtors for every toy donated and was then distributed among the local charities. Nonperishable food items were also welcome. During the previous year, 273 toys were donated. Event coordinator Karen Friess encouraged people to leave a gift under their tree. “This is a time when people need help and this is such a wonderful, giving community,” she said.
