(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago can lay claim to some bizarre incidents, but one of the weirdest supposedly occurred at O’Hare International Airport in November 2006.

That’s when a number of witnesses reported seeing an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) hovering over the airport. Their description was of a metallic gray saucer that lingered for five minutes over Terminal C before the object shot away at a high velocity, puncturing the clouds.

Several United Airlines employees, including pilots, reported seeing the UFO, but it did not appear on radar and federal officials ultimately attributed it all to a weather incident.

“Chicago, over the years, at least in this century, has had some interesting sightings that people should know about,” Mark Rodeghier, scientific director of the Center for UFO Studies in Chicago, tells the Looped In: Chicago podcast. “Of course, the most famous is the O’Hare sighting from 2006.”

A few things have changed in recent years. Most notably, the federal government has created a new acronym to describe UFOs. Now, they are more broadly designated as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAPs.

Also, the topic of potential alien visitors has gained a measure of traction. Witness the recent House Oversight hearing that featured sworn testimony from witnesses who seemed to bolster the existence of UFOs.

Regardless of how an individual feels about the issue of extraterrestrial life, reports about mysterious crafts are more widespread than you may think, one observer says.

“Seriously, every day we get 20 or 30 reports,” says Christian Stepien of the National UFO Reporting Center. “Most of them are probably misidentifications of aircrafts or drones or balloons or things like that. But then you come across a handful that are like, ‘Oh, my God.’ Somebody just saw a triangle the size of a football field hovering over their house, shooting a beam down into their back yard.

«There’s just no way that’s anything that the U.S. government or some aerospace company created. And you know, you could discount those things – if they weren’t reported over and over.”
