No One Will Save You is the new American science fiction horror film which has just one line of dialogue in the whole of its 93-minute running time.

We follow Brynn Adams who is an isolated and anxious young woman who has to battle an alien that has invaded her home.

But it turns out the alien invasion has gone further than just Brynn’s house.

The conclusion to the film, which went on general release earlier this month and is now available to stream on Disney+, has left some viewers a little perplexed.

*The following contains spoilers*

What is No One Will Save You about?

Brynn, a seamstress, played by Booksmart star, Kaitlyn Dever, is very much alone and ostracised from her community. She lives in her childhood home and mourns the loss of her mother and best friend, Maude, and copes with these losses by constructing a model town in her living room.

Throughout the film, there are hints that a past event has turned the town against Brynn although we have to wait until the end to discover what this is.

One day an alien invades her home. She battles against it and then when she flees to her town she realises that it too has been taken over by aliens.

Various battles between Brynn and the aliens ensue all the while with next to no dialogue.

Eventually, *spoiler alert*, towards the end of the film Brynn is taken up into the aliens’ spacecraft where the aliens look into Brynn’s mind. We see that in her youth and in a fit of anger Brynn swings a rock at another girl, Maude, killing her.

Everyone in the community has known about this and it has hung heavily over Brynn, thus explaining why she had locked herself away from society and created a new world through her model-making.

When the aliens see all of this, they decide they will not kill her. Instead, they’ll provide her with a second chance at life by taking over her body just like those in her community.

She now is part of her town, albeit one populated with human husks occupied by aliens. And curiously she takes part in what appears to be dance sequences from classic musicals.

In an interview with Collider, the film’s writer and director Brian Duffield said of the ending: “I really wanted to direct a musical, and no one would let me, so joke’s on them. No, I knew the ending needed to have something communal for Brynn.”

And so he put in a communal dance in the script and never changed it, expecting someone along the line to cut it out, but they didn’t, and it stayed.

Duffield added that he wanted Brynn to be “better off” at the end of the film than she was at the beginning.

How has the film been received?

The Guardian’s Benjamin Lee described it as “an awkward tonal jumble leaving us with a bizarre final scene that’s technically saying something but leaving us with nothing. A big swing, one could argue, but a big miss nonetheless.”

While Variety’s Peter Debruge was more taken with the film he conceded “one of its shortcomings is that without speech, whatever Duffield’s trying to say proves confusing to interpret”.

How can I watch No One Will Save You?

It is available to stream as a Hulu original film in the United States and on Disney+ internationally, however, you will need a subscription.
